One hour to rewrite the past . . .
For seventeen-year-old Emerson Cole, life is about seeing what isn't there: swooning Southern Belles; soldiers long forgotten; a haunting jazz trio that vanishes in an instant. Plagued by phantoms since her parents' death, she just wants the apparitions to stop so she can be normal. She's tried everything, but the visions keep coming back. So when her well-meaning brother brings in a consultant from a secretive organization called the Hourglass, Emerson's willing to try one last cure. But meeting Michael Weaver may not only change her future, it may change her past.
Who is this dark, mysterious, sympathetic guy, barely older than Emerson herself, who seems to believe every crazy word she says? Why does an electric charge seem to run through the room whenever he's around? And why is he so insistent that he needs her help to prevent a death that never should have happened?
I really haven’t read too many time travel novels. I think the concept is extremely intriguing but can also be complicated and hard to understand, with all the scientific terms and such. I am a simple girl, I like things that are easy to follow along to. Hourglass exceeded my expectations! I absolutely loved how time travel was mixed in with the supernatural elements of the people involved in the Hourglass organization. And of course there is just the right amount of romance thrown in to make this one fantastic read!
I think the synopsis above from goodreads is perfect in giving you an idea of what this story is about. Emerson has struggled with what she thinks are visions of ghosts from the past and when her brother hires a consultant from Hourglass to help her, she discovers there is so much more to what she can do. We learn, along with Emerson, that there are people who have certain powers in the world and what Hourglass specializes in is TIME. Her special talent can be very dangerous if the knowledge ends up in the wrong hands...
I have to say what made this book so brilliant for me was the characters. Usually it is the male characters that stand out to me, especially when they are cocky and bring humor to the story, but in this case it was Emerson, the female protagonist, that I loved so much! She was snarky and sassy and made me laugh repeatedly with how she responded to situations, especially with Michael and Kaleb. Michael was the mysterious and sweet boy that I immediately loved. There was a lot of sexual tension between these two, since they needed to keep their relationship more platonic due to their working relationship in Hourglass. Many times I just wanted to lock them in a room and tell them to kiss already! What was surprising to me, was I didn’t expect to fall in love with Kaleb as well! He was the cocky and confident type I always fall for in my reads. I didn’t expect to feel torn at times as to who I wanted Emerson to be with, but I admittedly did. I felt like I was cheating on Michael. LOL
I LOVED the last 1/3 of the book where the actual time traveling came into play. How all the different players came together in the story and secrets were revealed was really exciting! I wasn't shocked by the revelations but I still felt my heart race as the characters discovered the truths. We also get a brief glimpse at what ways time can be manipulated by other characters as well, but I feel like we just touched the surface on the possibilities that can be explored and I am looking forward to more of this in the coming novels.
I highly recommend this novel to those who are fans of supernatural, time-travel, romance and/or humor!
